Planning Lighting and Colour - Miss Georgiou

There are a variety of lighting styles and colours used which are essential within a music video in order to make it effective. Using these types of different styles can also show a generic convention towards soul. This can also be an effective way to set a mood for a certain scene. I am using a range of different examples within my planning of a music video which I think would be essential for it to fit well and make an effective piece.

An example of lighting used within my music video is high key lighting. This is going to be involved to set a mood of type of emotions particular character is feeling. This will be conventional towards genre of soul as it is a generic convention for enabling a sad tone for a scene. It can show a deeper meaning towards particular scene, making it even more creative. This is going to ensure that the audience are able to see a clear presentation of a particular scene. This is going to be used within the daytime scenes, to show a clear representation of the particular time of day and why this is. This type of lighting is going to be used during the flashback scenes, to present a day time date the couple are taking part in. This helps to represent the main character of the artist as constantly keeping herself busy, she is shown to always have something to do. This can then lead to a range of interpretations such as she is only organising herself to ensure she is constantly busy as a distraction towards her emotions. She is shown through the video as very careless, reckless and rebellious, however it could potentially be an act towards how she really feels. Maybe she is only behaving in this way as she may feel apprehensive if she were to put her heart on her sleeve and then only get heart broken from it. This would then be an easy way for her to stay happy and not let people take this happiness away from her, still representing her as a strong and independent artist. This type of lighting will also be used during the walk of shame scenes, to represent how early in the morning it is and she is only just coming home from a wild night out. This will show a clear representation of her very much careless behaviour.

The colours of black and white are going to included in through the micro element of editing. This is going to be used to manipulate to use of colour to clearly show the time frame the artist is being portrayed in. These particular colours are going to be used to show a past related story of the couple on a date, where their relationship was much stronger and the ex boyfriends feelings were much stronger. This is conventional towards my chosen genre of soul as these two colours can be seen as very upsetting and depressing, which is the main emotion being portrayed through this particular genre. This then shows that audiences will be able to clearly state which genre this music video is, as me and my group are going into a more alternative and different route towards the genre would stereotypically produce.

Spotlight is also going to be presented through my video. This is going to be used during the performance scene to show all importance of artist towards that particular fraction of the film. Used to effectively show her emotion, props, costume, hair and makeup in a clear and bright view for the audience. This would be conventional towards genre of soul as she will have lots of passion when singing the song, which is normally used within soul type songs to show the audience that it is something they are very desirous about. Also, this type of lighting is conventional towards the look of 60's my group is aiming for, jazz bands stereotypically known for using instruments in the background, artist wearing big hair, off the shoulder dress whilst singing into a standard microphone with the light brightest on them. Shows her body language and facial expressions to be extremely important and luminous effect go her the character which benefits when telling the story to the audience. This type of lighting will also distinctly show the positioning of character, which will be in the centre, to again highlight the artists importance to that particular performance scene.

Strobe lighting is going to be used throughout parts of my music video. This will be at a particular setting of a party to represent the character to be very dangerous and also mysterious. This also shows that the party is very lively and hardcore, which can reflect her type of personality. This is unconventional towards the genre of soul but is convetional towards the personality of the main character. I am hoping to easily portray her to the audience as careless and addicted to her crazy social life, which her boyfriend thoroughly hates and is causing the breakup which she is not too fussed about.

The target audience are easily able to build a relationship with the artist through particular types of lighting and colours analysed as they are able to see the artist in different types of scenarios and how she presents herself and behaves. The audience are then competent towards who the artist is on a deeper level. Learning more about her persona; what she enjoys doing, who she doesn't like and the kind of people she likes the involve herself with. The artist is showing vulnerability when presenting so much of her life and parts of her experiences she has endured, which the audience appreciate as it allows them to feel like they know her on a more personal level, like real life friends. The different types of lighting show her at different time within the day, which range from daytime activities, which mainly rely on natural lighting, to then night motives which are mainly artificial types of lighting.

  1. This post demonstrates proficient planning techniques, of the various lighting styles and colours that you would like to include within your music video. You have explained your choices and reasons well, by focusing on the hidden meanings.

    Aim-
    1) Relate points back to the soul genre in more detail
    2) Relate your points back to your lyrics, to demonstrate further planning techniques
