Throughout the music video, the main character is going to have a variety of costume/prop changes to show a clear representation towards a different period within the characters life. These settings are going to range from house party type vibe, flashbacks of the artist going on dates with her ex boyfriend, in her room, walking on the street and performing in a pub like place. Costumes, hair and make-up within the different scenes. Most of her costumes are subversive towards the genre of soul, mainly due to her presenting her reckless attitude through the use of clothing trends. However, this shows her originality from other female artists and how she stands out from the crowd. Audiences can admire her alternative nature and respect her for it.
The walk of shame scene will include her being shown to be very un presentable. This is going to be used to represent her wild night before hand and that she is just returning home. This type of iconography used within costume of the artist will not be conventional towards the genre of soul and female artists are usually perceived as innocent and pretty but destroyed inside due to their heart being broken. She will also have a wine bottle in her hand to show her constant addiction towards drinking, even in the early hours of the morning when she's all on her own. This can show to the audience that she is going through something negative and uses the power of alcohol to distract her from real life. All the consumption of alcohol shows why she is so careless, because she can't even think straight due to everything being a constant blur. This is shown in the lyrics "everything is slowing down" due to her being much under the influence. The audience are able to see this is going to be a long term addiction from the lyrics "river of no return." The audience can interpret that she is talking to her ex boyfriend about herself being the river and that he will not ever see her the same again due to her being in such a bad way. This music video is more juxtaposition towards the stereotypical male and female within a relationship. She is shown to be the one in control of the relationship and his heart.
Throughout the whole music video, she is going to have a big quiff and and very heavy makeup on, such as bold winged eyeliner. In some scenes will include more subtle or more dramatic tones of this. These are going to be used to represent her rebellious features and also extraordinary and different persona, which is healthy for change to allow the audience to feel refreshed when watching soul music videos rather than feeling bored watching similar things all the time. Using lots of hair products and amount of makeup take away any innocence which may be perceived. She is going to be shown as very experienced, especially when experimenting with things such as alcohol and drug abuse, showing to the audience that she has been through a lot. This relates back to the soul conventions as the audience are able to sympathise for the artist as she is shown to be taken advantage of, especially with men 'in her bed.' This leaves her to have trust issues for people who do actually care for her and causes her to push them away. She hides the pain through putting on an attitude, ready to party face to distract her from issues within her life.
During the duration for the music video, the artist will be portrayed voyeuristically to show her sexual mannerisms. This is mostly shown in the walk of shame scene where she has a short, tight dress on and the bedroom scene where she is in pajamas. This is conventional towards any genre of music as more audiences are watching the video, which makes it more popular and effective due to the female artist representing herself as a sexual object rather than a person, this makes it seem like she is not normal like everyone else but extraordinary (something every artist aims for.) This is conventional towards the genre of soul as it shows her as vulnerable. She uses the power of her figure and flirtatious attitude to get attention. "Now it's not hard to understand, why we just speak at night." Shows her to speak to her ex boyfriend only at night, showing they both want sexual relations with each robe but cannot handle the actual bonding and getting to know each other during the day.
For the stage performance scene, we have decided to make her look very 60's style, which was inspired from Amy's usual look but just more dramatic and extravagant. This is where she will look most attractive and elegant. For costume she will be wearing an all black off shoulder dress which is at the appropriate length on the leg. She will have heavy, but nice makeup on such as winged (not as bold at the party scenes) with red lipstick. This is conventional towards the music genre of soul as it will show her performing to the camera whilst looking beautiful and professional. This helps to mirror the style the music video in an overall view, of the 60's generation. As you can see they artists also have quiffs I'm their hair, this is an effective way to show the style of the music video as this type of hairstyle can be seen as an old fashioned hairstyle. We will also use a type of editing such as grainy and old to ensure the audience will fully understand this is a representation of the past. This is conventional towards the genre of soul as most female soul artists are shown as attractive, which then make the audience sympathise for them more when their heart has been broken from a low life boy.
The dates will have the least amount of effort put in comparing to other scenes, she is going to be seen as very casual. This is a condradiction because when girls are going out with someone they like on a date, they usually put in effort to make them look the best they can to impress their significant other. She will have a costume on of jeans, pumps, and a nice lace shirt. She will still have a quiff but just not as dramatic, and will also have her signature winged eyeliner. This shows her as careless towards this situation. This can perceive to the audience that all she wants to do is get it over and done with so she can then go out later and be the party girl she normally is. This can also show that she uses her party lifestyle to distract her from normal life, maybe because she is scared to face it. This is conventional towards the genre of soul as even though she pretends to be tough, she is actually a scared little girl who doesn't want to step out of her comfort zone. The audience are able to sympathise for her. She will be shown as careless to stop her from catching feelings and then being heart broken, which is why her guard is so high up. She used her past relations with men to stop her being happily in love. Lyrics which support this within the song are "it's something I know you can't do, separate sex with emotion," she is so use to having things such as one night stands with so,eone who doesn't know or care about her, that it's almost a shock to her when someone actually does. This can causes her to react negatively as that's the only way she knows. Shows her as broken individual. "want the same thing where we lay, otherwise mines a different way." This shows her to be very independant, wants sex but then nothing after that, this also highlights her wild and reckless party behaviour.
Our target audience, which ranges from 15-25 years are able to build a relationship with the artists as they can get more of an understanding towards the particular type of persona the artist is trying to convey throughout the music video. She is going to be seen as very alternative and different, and that's the kind of creativity many audiences admire and can help to increase her fan base. They are able to see her in all different types of light, such as her looking her best (stage performance scene) and her looking her worst, very rough and unattractive (walk of shame scene.) This type of planning was beneficial for me as I was able to go into more depth towards the type of artist representation I am trying to pursue.
