Planning Magazine Advert - Miss Miller

Magazine adverts are important in relation as it is another way for more audiences to acknowledge the artist and what they do. They can become more aware towards who they are, their appearance and what type of genre they range in. This is an example of promotion towards the artist's album. This is effective as the artist is then always being thought about when the audience do not even expect it. Including this within a magazine allows the audience to enjoy the artist and their music even more, if the magazine they purchased they do like (inevitably likeable due to the reason of them purchasing it.) This is an effective way for the artist and their album to be constantly in the lime light and not forgotten about. For my magazine advert, I will be creating one which links into the soul genre. This is important as it is an advertisement for album, meaning that the audience have not heard or seen the album, resulting towards it being the first time fans are witnessing it. This is an important part for the audience to see the representation of the artist and get an overall view upon what type of music is going to be included, how they artist wishes to perceive themselves and how good critics such as newspapers have rated the album as a whole. I will be including a picture of the artist by themselves, including some of the most popular singles which have already been published, the artists name and the release date.

For my magazine advert, I decided to keep all the colours very off key, such as black and white, or off colour filters to set a mood. This type of micro element is effective to use and it immediately insinuates to the audience that this magazine advert will relate to sad type of music, which is generally the genre of soul. Using the language used will also be in the colour black and bold to make it stand out from the monochrome background, so it does not blend in, but still fit into to the genre it is situated in. I decided to include a dress upon the artist in a bright red colour. This is extremely effective as it represents the artist in an immediate manner. I didn't want to only include all dull colours like the stereotypical soul magazine adverts would include as the planning of my music video is extraordinary to typical soul music videos.
The artist is going to be perceived as very careless, rebellious and very contradicted to usual female soul artists as they are stereotypically known as very sweet and innocent which make the audience sympathise for them more when they get their heart broken. The red was purposely used to represent her as a dangerous and sexual female. This is shown as she is wearing a short dress, overdose upon drugs/alcohol and during her songs she is talking about playing around with boys emotions. There is only one image that will be used which is of the girl herself to represent the importance of her towards to album.

Most of the artist is going to be shown to represent her as a sexual object, as lots of skin will be on shown. I also thought her lying down on something such as a bed would be effective as it will highlight how attractive the artist is as her hair would naturally fall into curls. This also relates towards one of her songs 'In My Bed,' which can influence the audience into purchasing the album as they enjoy this song. This will also highlight the sexual magnetism which is presented which is a good set of advertisement, as male audiences can feel attracted to her and female audiences can idolise her and look up to her ways. She is also represented to be attractive, as she is wearing nice clothes, her hair is done nicely and also has a lot of makeup on. Her blunt expression on her face can interpret that she is lost in some sort of thought, showing she has a lot on her mind. This can reveal to the audience that she is going through a lot in her life, and this being shown in an advertisement to promote the album can convey that it is going to be revealed throughout the album. This can intrigue the audience towards purchasing the album as it leaves curiosity as not a lot is exposed.

The type of camera shot I think would be most effective would be a high angle, as you will see the artist in full form upon the bed. Only using this character will also justify the independence which is trying to be conveyed throughout the album. This type of magazine advert is different as most soul magazine adverts will show the artist to be distraught by a certain situation, which will be shown through her looking down/crying etc. Some magazine adverts may also include the boy themselves within the advertisement. Within my advertisement, she is shown to be on her own and looking quite happy about it, through her facial expressions, body language and how beautiful she looks (taking care of herself through hair and makeup.) This can be an inspirational influence upon young girls that they do not need a significant other in their life to be happy, and that it always ends up to be an unhappy and heart broken situation.

The design and layout immediately shows the audience that this is some form of advertisement towards this particular artist, due to the big bold language of the artists name, the artist themselves, the album name, release date, some songs included, the production company and an example of a review. The audience are also able to be aware that this is a promotion towards a new music video, due to unfamiliar song titles and a trendy picture of the artist in a nice red dress with her hair and makeup all done up. The language is very informative as it presents everything essential for the audience to be more aware of the album. This includes album release dates, the album title and reviews. I wanted to make the design very simplistic so that it didn't look like there was too much going on and it looked too over whelming. The language is shown to be bold to grab the audiences attention more, such as the artists name. I wanted to make the texts different fonts and sizes to grab the audiences attention first, and if they were interested; they are able to read more information upon the album. If I was to use the information in all the same size, with the same level of boldness added towards it would only make it look very cramped and uneasy to read. This will then leave the audience to not even bother looking at the advertisement due to how messy it would have looked. The background, I wanted to use an image of the artist to show the audience an insight towards how she physically looks, what she likes to wear and how she likes to dress herself, such as doing her hair and makeup. The audience are also able to also create gestures towards her personality, such as her wearing a red dress; which connotes she is dangerous as red is often referred to blood. I wanted to only use an image of the artist herself for the design to show her as an independent artist, this is also effective as it shows her hidden message of her being a careless towards boys as she is an independent woman who does not live for a man, as it only gets your heart broken. My artist can be perceived as a feminist, which can intrigue more audiences to watch her work as she is seen to be powerful artist. She does not live for a man, but for herself, doing what she wants in her free time and  has a successful career.

I decided to make the typography the colour of black but ensuring it is bold to make it stand out from the background scenery. I thought it was most appropriate to make the artist name extra bold and bigger font than the rest of information involved to ensure it grabs the readers attention just as much as the picture would. This makes the audience look at the name first then afterwards look at the rest of the language used as they wish to read on as they may have already heard of the famous name 'Cara-Lily' and wish to see new things she is doing. This can also make her name more memorable for future reference, which can make her more successful within her career. When the writing wasn't in capitals, I decided to make the writing slightly slanted, joint and putting love hearts about the i's to make it look more girly and sweet. This is conventional towards the genre of soul as it represents the artist as innocent, however thus is juxtaposed subtly through the image of her being showing to be dangerous and sexy and throughout the alm as rebellious and careless. This can interest the audience towards purchasing the album as they wish to learn more about the artist as not much is given away. This is shown through limited use of language and a picture of her. Within the language, I included the artists name, the album name, examples of hit songs on the album, release date, name of production company and ratings of a newspaper. This was effective as there was necessary information provided, but not too much which would disengage the audience. Too much information can also unattract the target audience, as they mainly vary in teenagers. Teenagers are stereotypically known to become uninterested and un motivated to read or do something which seems too hard and difficult. Little information can also interest the target audience as they are not being told the fully story, which will leave them curious resulting to purchasing the album. The style of language is very easy to read which will attract the target audience towards reading more as it is not too complicated and time consuming. I did not want to include qualitative data as it would seem too over powering and cramped.

I found this planning scheme to be useful when in relation to taking pictures for my advert as it allowed me to become more specific and picky towards what kind of photo I wished to use. Before creating this plan for the magazine advert, I was apprehensive and uncertain towards how I wanted the advert to look, I had a range of different ideas in my head which would have only made it more
confusing for me to use when taking the pictures of the artist without having planned it first. This also helped me to prepare for the use of Photoshop as I am now more aware towards where I want the picture and use of language to be placed whilst still making it look effective. I am more aware towards the pictures I need to take for my advert I have organised myself towards what I think this will be most effective. I think this certain image is most effective as it represents the artist exactly how my group and I imagined to portray her. She is shown to be pretty whilst also sexually magnetised with a careless vibe from her which will make her adored by fans due to her extraordinary persona. I have taken inspiration from a variety of different soul artists to create my own product. An example is the artist; Adele. I admired how the whole colour was edited to a monochrome black and white. I thought this was effective as it immediately shows the audience what genre the album specifies in. This shows them through the mood set from
the colouring, as these two colours are very bland, dull and can be depressing. These emotions fit with the genre of soul as they are very passionate and vulnerable. The editing style would not appeal to the audience as a dance genre as they usually use someone who is shown to be very happy, with bright colours which will make the audience have a similar mood due to the amount of positivity which is provided. Soul music is more serious, as it is about an artist sharing an experience which is very upsetting and sad. Another example of inspiration I gained from a successful artist was Paloma Faith. She is shown to be duplicated within her magazine advert. Each duplication shows her hair to remain the same to be in a bright, vibrant red colour. This inspired me to use within my magazine advert, as it connotes a sense of danger, which can show the artist is an unsafe personality. This can intrigue audiences to purchase the album as she is an edgy character, and ages of target audiences, 15-25 year olds are always told to stay away from dangerous things which only makes them want to go near it, leaving them to buying the album. The colour red is shown in the middle of the advert, as the artist costume as a trendy, off shoulder dress.

  1. You have provided a somewhat sound analysis of your magazine advert plan, explaining why you have chosen certain elements to use within your advert, and what they could connote to an extent. You need to think beyond the obvious and elaborate on some of your points more

    You need to:
    1) Think about all connotations of elements used (style of language?)
    2) Make sure you explain all elements fully in terms of what they create for the audience and how it will help promote the artist
    3) Make sure you fully explain the point you are trying to make, and watch your SPAG as it can become very confusing and unclear what you are trying to say
    4) You need to elaborate on some of your points more e.g. design and layout

  2. 5) Mention where you have taken inspirations from

  3. A good final analysis, as you have elaborated on how the artist is represented within your plan and how it will appeal to an audience/build a relationship with them. You have also mentioned some of your inspirations as well as some of the style of language used. To improve, you need to elaborate on these two final points as well as continue to check SPAG
