Analysis of a Star and Dyers Theory - Miss Miller

There are a range of artists who re-invent themselves for a range of reasons. The reasons can range from wanting to express their true personalities on a deeper level, to wanting to reach out and attract different target audiences or to become more popular or famous by almost creating a new individual for themselves. This can be a very effective way for celebrities to become more successful and more famous as they are constantly being talked about, whether on social media, the news, music award shows and so on. Artists can also become more mature and feel that the work that they are creating is not up to the standard they could potentially create if they were making music in a different genre. Changing your genre of music and target audience can make people almost on edge towards what the certain celebrity is going to do next as they are always making publicity.
The most changed artist to this date is Miley Cyrus. Celebrities who grow up in the public eye are most likely to change their target audience and trends etc, as they are growing up and learning who they are day by day, which can cause lots of controversy when asking the opinion of parents, when their children's idol was a Disney pop star who has now spiralled out of control. Growing up in the public eye can only be imagined as being very stressful and scary, which can only pro vote the artist to become extra edgy and sexual when they are older.
Miley Cyrus starred in Disney Channel's hit show 'Hannah Montana,' and was loved by millions from her sweet and innocent persona. Miley soon after changed everything about herself by cutting her hair, wearing very little clothing, behaving constantly sexual and constantly behaving very inappropriately.

The artist who has changed over the years who I have decided to analyse is the artist Selena Gomez. She was also a celebrity who grew up in the public eye. She first starred in one of Disney Channel's shows 'Wizard's of Waverly Place.' When she was first on the famous scene, she was seen as edgy in a young way, seen as very cute and sweet. One her first songs released was 'Falling Down,' which was released in 2009.
By watching the video straight away, there is a clear and repetitive point from Goodwin's theory to show this is an effective music video. (The music video demonstrates genre characteristics.) The artist is shown as dancing around having a good time whilst singing to the song showing lots of close up to show her natural prettiness and to show her young face. Also when there is a long shot of the artist, she is not shown in a sexual manner like most female artists are, as she is primarily just singing whilst wearing an acceptable amount of clothing. Her clothing is conventional
to pop rock due to dark colours presented. She is shown to be wearing dark colours such as black, grey and dark purples. Throughout the video with various costume changes, she is shown to be dressed very casual, wearing things such as t-shirt and jeans. This can represent her young age as she is shown to not reveal much flesh, as she is still a young girl rather than a matured woman. She does not get assets in the video out such as cleavage.

This can also be conventional towards the genre of pop as she is shown to give an 'I don't care' attitude, which can be perceived through her clothing as she is not trying to be someone she is not, but only herself such as things shed wear maybe on a day to day basis. Young audiences are not only building a relationship with her due to similar ages, but also because they are learning more about her. The genre for this artist is Pop with some subtle Rock elements towards it. This music video is conventional towards its genre as it is very performance based to show the artist dancing, singing and certain trends she is conveying. The background is mainly showing lots of bright lights, almost representing a real stage performance happening. The setting can be shown as a contradiction towards her young age as it consists throughout the video to remain very dark, only being able to see the artists and the band slightly in the background. The rest of the black can portray an element of mystery and danger. This is subversive to the teenage years for girls ranging from 12-15 years old as they are stereotyped as sweet and innocent. This can show her extraordinary persona, which audiences enjoy to watch as they are viewing someone who is refreshing and different. Iconography used can be conveyed as very matured, as props include things such as lots of big, heavy lighting, green screens and musical instruments.

This can then show to the audience that she is living a lifestyle which is not suited for her age group. This can give an insight towards the audience towards her particular life. As you can see from the picture above, the camera is actually showing almost a behind the scenes towards her
performing to her music video. This can intrigue the target audience of 12-18 year olds to watch the music video as these age groups are stereotypically perceived to enjoy things such as gossip and other peoples life. By watching this music video, allows audiences to get a glimpse towards what her career involves, making it an effective music video. The artist representation is shown to be quite edgy and dangerous, shown through use of dark colours and attitude she portrays through her confident body language when she dances, which also shows she does not care about what people think about her and she will dance how she desires. However, she is also shown to be innocent through use of costume and makeup. The audience are able to see the minimal amount of makeup used to show her young age.

She is shown to be wearing little amount of face makeup, but mainly noticeable makeup shown in the lip and eye area. She is not shown to be wearing things such as contour to keep her face as natural as
possible, this can also emphasise her natural beauty, which is usually seen on young girls. This is perceived as girls when they are going through teenage stages, stereotypically then go through experimental stages with such things like makeup, clothing trends and   different idols. The target audience for this music video is young teenage girls, as the type of music is girly, but also quite edgy with the type of beat and young girls voice. The hidden meaning through this video can be to show her dark side. As there are props involved such as camera equipment surrounding the artist, can then show almost an over-whelming situation. This can be a hidden meaning as she is just a young teenage girl playing the lifestyle role of a grown woman, having a very successful job. This particular job can be extremely overwhelming due to the artist being constantly in the public eye, with people she does not know criticising her appearance and her musical work, which can be more hurtful in the early teenage years as you are more sensitive due to insecurities feeling more worse than ever. This music video can have a hidden meaning behind it such as she is being suffocated by her lifestyle ands career, this is not shown in an obvious way to allow audiences to enjoy the Pop music video without feeling upset and sympthasising for her. This hidden meaning can also relate to the song title "Falling Down," which can represent her emotional state, towards the extent of her actually falling down maybe due to things such as stress.

The second music video from Selena Gomez I chose to analyse was 'Who Says.' I decided to choose this particular one as her genre of music started to shift. This was interesting to analyse as you can see how she is growing up and maturing and how she is representing that within her music. This music video is about girls having self confidence and feeling good about themselves, which is a difficult subject as girls are getting older and become more insecure about themselves. Selena sets a good example by taking the journey with her fans, as she is part of the young generation too and gives many rhetorical questions within the song to almost sarcastically say no one is judging your flaws. The genre of the song is still Pop but a bit more upbeat and 'girly' than elements of rock like her first songs. This music video was released in 2011.
An example of Goodwin's theory used within this music video is at the start whilst a character in the video is looking through the lens of a camera whilst taking photographs of her (reference to notion of looking.) there is a long shot with both characters in the scene showing Selena's face not looking happy with the situation as she is taking of her earrings and heels and runs away. This shows immediately that she does not care about materialistic and vain products or places because she feels good and confident about herself to do as she desires.
Dyers theory represents Selena as a very sweet and innocent character towards her fans and not fake. An example of this in the music video is when she runs into the bathroom to take off all her makeup, exposing her true self and encourages fans to stay natural, shortly afterwards running out to go and dance and sing with groups of girls. This makes fans want to

follow in her footsteps, as they are inspired to do what their idol does. This artist can be used as a product as she can be used to advertise products to girls to help make them feel good about themselves, which would relate to the music video, such as clothing and perfume ranges. The lighting is effective as it is shown throughout the video showing very warm colours. This is effective for this particular music video as it is meant to be a very warm music video. I say this because the artist is trying to bring positivity towards the audience to love themselves, if the music video were to involve dark colours such as black and blues, it could confuse the audience and ruin the whole message putting across. The meaning towards this music video is to love yourself and not listen to anyone else. I think this is effective as she was shown in the public eye of her growing up. She has been nastily talked about by magazines and social media either criticising her appearance or her work. This can be extremely hurtful for an in progress teenager, who is stereotypically known to be more insecure than someone who is an adult. This can be inspirational for the audience as they can then look up and idolise her.

Selena Gomez is represented as both ordinary and extraordinary within the music video as she is different from the majority of female artists, as they are stereotypically known as revealing themselves in a sexual manner. This is an example of Dyer's theory. This is shown in the music video when she is wearing clothing such as long dresses and baggy clothes. Also, ordinary as girls are constantly being told to stop feeling insecure, however; Selena has said this statement in a more inspiring and bolder manner. Another way which is she presented as extraordinary is the meaning of the song, which is teaching young girls to love themselves and to not listen to people who try to knock you down, this represents her as caring towards her fans more than her own emotions and haters. Female artists are stereotypically known to write songs about being in love and being heart broken, revolving their career towards their personal love life. Selena is shown to not care about wanting materialistic goods, which most people in life aim to have. This is shown in the music video where she has it all at a photo shoot, and runs out taking off her expensive heels and fine jewellery whilst running along the street pathway. This makes the audience believe that she is just as normal as her fans and does not see a superiority between her and them. Although, she is shown as ordinary in the music video, shows her in an extraordinary manner, as most singers aim to be more superior than others in order to gain respect, such as rappers, using iconography of expensive cars, costume and jewellery and also expensive settings with lots of women in lust about them, to overall say 'look how much more I have than you.'

The target audience to this music video is mainly teenage girls but around 12-22 year old girls. The target audience has not changed mcuh from her older songs but had started to grab older peoples attention, such as people in their 20's. The target audience for this music video has altered from her previous music video of 'Falling Down' as the audience is becoming more mature within age. This is because she is becoming older herself, this is shown through such things like her clothing trends are changing. You are able to see how the target audience has slightly altered as the artist is mainly focusing upon young teenagers to young adults. This is a successful age range as these are a stereotypical ages which girls are most self conscious and always not feeling good way. Selena is then shown as a good role model, telling them to love themselves, as she is using her popular status to send a positive and impacting message towards large groups of audience as it gained an overall view on Youtube on 227+ million views.

The final music video I have analysed from this artist is her most recent single called 'Good For You.' Selena Gomez has taken a very big leap towards changing her style, image and genre, which is evident throughout the video. This song is categorised more into the R&B genre, which does mean changes within the setting of the video, artist characteristics and difference in target audience.
The artist's body language has differed. Before, in old music videos, the artist was very jumpy and very child like, however; in present time, she is slowly moving on the sofa and being very sexual towards the camera. A similar micro elements from mise en scene, is the positioning of the character, as she is always centered in the middle to highlight he relevance of herself within the video, even though there are no other characters involved. Her style has more basic than trend setting. In the video, she is shown to wear simple coloured and styled clothes as she is trying to draw more attention towards the fact that she has got older and her maturity levels have risen. She is trying to leave a more sexual long term message than showing what design of clothes she is wearing.

Costume and hair has also changed for this artist. Her old trends were very appropriate, being covered quite a lot with little skin on show. Now she has become a lot more bare whilst showing herself in the music video to have damp hair and t-shirt. This then evolved to the audience viewing her in a different light and insinuate a more sexual magnetism towards her. I think using very little clothing, and when being used, having ti basic instead of extravagant is effective as it shows her as being vulnerable. It highlights her sexual mannerisms towards someone she has feelings for and is expressing them in a way as if he is just watching and not a large audience of 340+ million. This can then also show how her confidence has increased, as she is now comfortable as using her voyeuristic ways to making a more successful career.

There is also another example of the artist shown to have matured by the artist being shown to give a tasteful glimpse and teases towards her in the shower. This shows a vulnerable and extrememly bare state within that particular scene. This is something that is seen to be inappropriate, and is a clear showing of how much her character has changed since she first started the industry. Also, as she is changing her type of music genre to R&B, female artists are expected to behave in a different manner than a female artist who focuses on soul music. This is due to the hugely different target audience. Women are expected to have lots of attitude, and to be very powerful, whilst also being objectified sexual by male audiences.

Slow editing is used effectively within the music video. This is a micro element which relates towards Goodwin's theory, which makes a successful music video. One of his theories were the relationship between he music and visuals. This is effective due to the slow motion of camera usage towards the slow beat of the song. This is used when the audience are watching Selena in the shower, which again shows her in a provocative manner. Hidden meanings towards using the editing style of slow editing can be towards her and the boys relationship. Such as they were taking things slow to ensure feelings don't get hurt early one, the couple are able to develop  strong feelings towards each other, which has led her to only want to please her boyfriend and no one else, shown in both a sexual and emotional way.

A use of cinematography is used to show the power of the artist. Low angle is used within a clip of the video to make the audience look up to the character, shows her as a dominant artist. This is effective for the genre of R&B, (which she is trying to persue into) as women which specify in that particular genre are respected (eg, Nicki Minaj, Rhianna, Beyonce.) Using this type of camera angle can have a long of hidden meanings, such as she is the dominant one within her relationship with the mystery man. She is shown as dominant as she is the one at a higher level, more in the hierarchy category.
She is represented as both extraordinary and ordinary in various amounts of ways. This is theory which Dyer created which makes a successful artist. She is shown as ordinary shown through clothing, such as basic jeans and white t shirt. This can show that she is just like every person in the world being in love, and that being famous doesn't make you love any more or less. The audience are then able to create a relationship with her as they can be able to express the same emotion as they have felt it in some degree before. Audiences are then able to create a bond due to the relatable emotion, which can make the audience happy for the artist as she is shown to be happily in love. She is also shown as extraordinary as is shown to be highly confident from being in lust and love. She is shown to not have a care in the world and only think about the boyfriend and only wants the best for him. She's in her own extraordinary world that only revolves around her happiness with her loved one. This is extraordinary as it is hard to be constantly in the publics eye and would inevitably receive hate as well as love when you are that known around the world. Audiences are then able to respect her as she is shown as a young woman, experiencing love and wanting to express her lubricious emotions towards her fans as if it is a real life girl to girl gossip session talking about boys.

A camera use of close up is used effectively within the music video to clearly show the heavy makeup she is representing. She is wearing thick, black eye makeup to make herself seem more appealing towards male audiences in a voyeuristic way. This also shows a sense of danger as girls who do not wear makeup, or minimal amounts are stereotypically seen in society to be very sweet and innocent, however girls of the opposite are seen to be dangerous, scary and lots of trouble. The target audience for this music video is 15-25 year olds. These age ranges are suitable as it is about a love story, which these ages are stereotypically more vulnerable to and they are new to the experience and falling in love. She is also shown in a voyeuristic way with lots of skin being revealed, which shows her sexual persona, which the age ranges of 15-25 year olds are fully aware of due to high hormone rates of the sex drive rather than someone who is younger or older than the particular ages. You are able to see how Selena's target audience has changed over time due to how much she has matured over the years and how she has gone from a teenager to adult, also evolving her music alongside of her. You are able to see how the artist has changed her trends in terms of genre and beat, costume, body language, and narrative, as she is now much more sexual and talking about relationships and being in love, instead of being an independent punk rock young teenage girl that once had no interest of boys. Audiences are able to create a bond with the artist as they are able to see how she has evolved into a matured, young woman. Audiences are also able to see her vulnerability, as she is talking about how much she likes someone and she only wants to be 'good to them.' This can then be perceived as kind of gossip, a friend to friend scenario where one girl is telling the other her current relationship status. The audience are then able to create a relationship as it seems like a real life conversation rather than just a music video.

After analysing how the artist has changed over time into a more successful artist really showed me a more in depth response towards how important it is for artists to portray a certain new feeling or emotion within their work. This has helped me to be inspired for my music video as I was able to recognise what kind of elements the artist has kept and which she has gained. For example: staying in similar genres but giving more meaning towards her work. I think giving a lot of meaning towards the music video really helps the audience connect with the situation and artist, which is why I am thinking to base my music video in the genre of soul. This genre is the most effective as it portrays the most amount of passion, as they music involved usually includes a devastating experience the artist has endured, such as a break up. However; I am extremely drawn to an artist who is shown to be rebellious. This is most shown in Selena's work in her video 'Good For you' as she takes a leap from girly songs to a more sexual song with minimal clothing and narrative being shown, just her performing to a camera. This also shows a sense of maturity within her work. Some artists which I think would fit into the criteria of my visualised music video would be artists such as Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears. They are all sexually magnetised women due to their maturity. I am particularly interested in Amy Winehouse due to her rebellious representation, she is shown to be have tattoos, smoke, drink acohol and have an overall very careless attitude. I think this would be effective to include within producing a music video as it can have a range of hidden meanings, such as women independence. This is shown to be very rare within the soul genre, as female artists are shown to live for men and then get heart broken by them. Using this element will show a sense of extraordinary within the artist, which will be refreshing for audiences to watch.

Risk Assessment - Miss Georgiou

The purpose of a risk assessment is to understand and gain knowledge towards potential threats towards finishing the music video and to the people involved. As you can see from the table above, I have provided a variety of risks that can occur within the music video and ways in which to prevent them. By writing in detail what can potentially happen then makes the group more careful towards the particular risk. It can also make individuals feel more at ease as they are being made aware towards what can concievably happen and ways they can prevent it themselves and how me and my group will help to prevent it. I have included various amounts of examples which a risk can happen throughout the music video. Creating this assessment was beneficial for me as it made me more aware towards the fact that a small mistake can make a very big impact. This then encouraged me to be more organised and prioritise this risk assessment before filming anything to ensure there are no on site risks which could may disrupt and ruin the music video scene. Doing an assessment of this allows everyone to be more aware of risks that may occur and can be more cautious when they are close to erupt.

We did not encounter many risks within our filming, due to how aware we became after doing our planning for the risks. However; an example of a risk we almost encountered was the weather risk. The day we planned to film our walk of shame scene which was outdoors, it started raining; despite checking weather apps before hand. This could have been a risk for the artist as she was wearing heels and could have very easily slipped and extremely hurt herself, maybe even leading to unable to film any scenes due to the amount of pain and bruises. We then thought it would be appropriate to postpone this scene to another day and then use the time to film an indoors scene. Another risk which we encountered was characters becoming too much under the influence during the party scene, despite me and my groups best attempts to take the alcohol away. This was a contribution towards why this scene was not successful. This risk was why we thought it would be more appropriate to re-film this scene in a different setting, where the whole scene is acting out in a hypothetical situation. Within the role of this risk assessment, I have learnt how much one little risk can result towards such a strain within the music video. This then made me more aware towards little and big things within the music video, to ensure everything runs smoothly and efficiently.

Filming schedule - Miss Georgiou

Within the filming schedule, me and my group thoroughly planned each fraction in detail with help from planning with our storyboards. Although, we would go into more detail with the dates, times, the content, costume, hair, make-up, iconography, personnel involved and equipment needed to complete the certain fraction. During filming, me and my group did follow the filming schedule in order to be organised and complete the music video in timed form. We did not make any changes. However, we had to change a date to the day after for the house party scene as it made more sense for the extras involved and the party host could no longer do that day. This set back did not hold my group back due to the minor date change of just the day after. This is shown through fractions 12 to 19 and also 43 to 56. All of the rest of the scenes stayed exactly the same, which represents our effective organisational and planning skills. The costume stayed exactly the same, which was shared throughout the group of existing clothes we already had which we thought was suitable for a particular scene and the representation of the artist. We would change things slightly which would range in the duration of the shot, for example adding or taking away a second to make the

Within the planning of this detailed filming schedule, there are a few fractions which we decided to change. Me and my group decided to convert different days around which where meant to be for different scenes. The dates which we were meant to film our walk of shame scene on the 15th November. However; we had previously checked various weather apps to ensure we got the most precise accuracy of temperature possible. It said it was meant to be mild, which was suitable for the walk of shame scene, as the neutral weather allowed no disruption from the distraction of the artist. The day we decided to include then coincidentally was terrible weather as it was raining all night. Although, me and my group decided to take advantage of the equipment we currently were possessing and concluded to use this day to film the bedroom scene. This was effective as it was indoors and the rain would then not interrupt our filming. This was the only change towards the planning of our filming schedule.

We decided as a group to re film the party scene, as the filming which we did manage to get was not effective and would have ruined the music video. We decided as a group, it would be more successful to create a hypothetical party scene, where it is all acted out without using authentic party scene material. We thought this was better as extras which were involved were not listening to instructions and only wanted to enjoy their Friday night out. We will now create this scene in an earlier afternoon time rather than late at night, and are also shooting it in school rather than an actual house party. This would be more effective as people in a school environment will naturally feel more motivated to complete the work. The filming of this scene is postponed to the 4th December.

Additional scenes my group decided to include was made in the performance scenes. We initially planned to use types of cinematography like mid shots and close ups just of the artist singing in the middle of the stage. However, on the day of filming, we thought involving close ups of the artist also singing against a brick wall would be effective. This then allowed us to involve a variety of shots within this scene. We also added more footage to other verses which we had not planned to use for this scene. We thought this was efficient as we were then more organised incase of another scene ends up not fitting well with the verse, we then have a back up plan. From the role of a filming schedule, I have learnt how much detail needs to be involved within every fraction of the scene. This then allowed us to be more organised and more aware of what needs to be provided for a certain scene. This type of planning allowed us to be more formulated as a group.  We went into detail in every element for the fraction, this involved micro elements such as costume, hair and makeup, camera shots, iconography, equipment, date, time and locations.

Storyboards - Miss Georgiou

The purpose of a storyboard is to allow every individual within the group to get more familar within the narrative and performance which is going to be included within our music video. Storyboards usually consist of illustrations to be able to pre-visualise how me and my group would like a certain scene to go. We are able to contribute ideas and see in more thorough detail which scene is going to be used within which part of the music video. We are able to understand with greater knowledge which scene is going to be in what fraction, the duration of this, what the scene is going to be included, the iconography used, editing, actors, location and more. Storyboards are a good way for our group to organise ourselves towards making a successful music video. We are able to visually see how we wish particular scenes to play out through quick drawings and also see the fraction of the scene through text as we go into more description towards what we wish to include.

We used a range of primary research to get more of an idea towards what to include within the storyboard plan. This would include communicating as a group towards clothes we all own to use as costumes we think would be most suitable for the different scenes. Working together as a team, we would then send each other pictures as possible costume ideas from our wardrobe selection and make a decision as a group towards what would be most effective and how it would represent the artist of her persona through the fashion of her clothes. This enabled us as a group to become effective towards organising iconography and costume elements for our music video. Secondary research was conducted to get more knowledge towards storyboards, looking at successful ones to get more of an idea towards what needs to involved in order to get full information and closure essential to succeed in planning a storyboard. This type of research was found through the use of the internet. We shared a role of responsibilities as a group to plan this storyboard. We decided to make a team effort to engage all of our ideas into one as we thought that would be most efficient rather than setting roles and making one member of the group put in only their ideas. I would include quick stiches of each fraction of how we plan the scene to go as I participate in A level art.

Our team effort would include what scenario of a particular narrative to include in a certain fragment and why. An example of  this is the very first fraction, which is going to be the bedroom scene where she is performing to the character. The location is going to be a bedroom, using a mid shot to show the artist sitting in her bed, under her covers. We thought this would be effective as it is starting up the music video showing links with the song, as the title of the song is 'In My Bed.' This also immediately shows the audience how she wishes to present herself, which is very scruffy and care free, shown through messy, un-brushed hair, left over makeup from the night before and lack of motivation, which is shown through her being lazy in bed. We completed all of our storyboards by having our analysed lyrics sheet in front of us, which showed where we had already planned to put what particular scene in which bit of the song. We then used this as a base which then allowed us to go into more depth towards a particular scene and add more towards what we wish to include, the description of the fraction and how we are going to complete it. This was extremely successful and I am excited to see the outcome of our music video which was benefitted from all of this efficient types of planning. Most of our inspiration came from the artists song we are using, Amy Winehouse. She has a very altmerative look and persona about her which makes her interesting and refreshing. Her and our hypothetical artist are quite similar so we watched more and researched more of Amy's videos to get more of an idea how she portrays her behaviour and reckless acts within our music video and how we could interpret this within our own production. Some examples of inspiration we gained from her is the big backcombed hair and makeup, which is shown throughout the video to show maturity within her age and take away any young traits which can perceive her as innocent. We also gained inspiration from Amy's videos of her drinking a lot of alcohol. This can immediately show her reckless and off the rales behaviour. We took this into account and included the artist drinking from when we wakes up in the morning, to late at night. This can interpret to the audience that she is unstable and in a negative situation at that time, and uses alcohol as an unhealthy form of distraction. We also wanted to make this video relevant towards our chosen genre of soul as much as possible, as we do include things which can be seen as subversive towards the soul culture. We took inspiration from Duffys, music video Warwick Avenue, where there has been adjustment of colour. It has been made quite dull with grey tones. This sets a mood for the audience of how the artist is feeling and we will show this throughout the video to show her mood. We also took inspiration from Amy Winehouses song 'Back to Black.' Again with the colour scheme, it is shown throughout in the editing colour of monochrome. The colours of black and white are effective as they can show a sad or past related situation. There is no brightness, but only dullness within these colours which show a negative situation. We wish to conclude this in the middle towards the end of the storyboards, to show a constant sadness within the video, and that there is no happy ending which the audience can then sympathise for. This will be shown within the date scene.

When constructing our music video. We did mainly stick to the plan of the storyboard. However; we did think outside of the box and decided that when we was filming our music video, we would film more scenes than needed incase a scene we high out would be effective was actually not. This allowed us to be more confident when it came to editing the production. On the other hand, would then slightly change the plan of the storyboard. We would add different scenes into different fractions as we thought it was more suitable and appropriate. For example, planning in the storyboard to use the performance scene for fraction 24, but using he walk of shame scene as it would fit more well with the words, the lip syncing and overall storyline of the narrative and performance. We also shortened the time of the fractions, as we planned to mainly have each fraction around 2-4 seconds. When it came to editing this, we then realised it would be too long and boring for the audience and changed it to around 1-2 seconds per fraction, with the odd 3-4 second scene. We followed the main structure of the storyboard, but invetiable made slight changes which we thought we be most efficient. Following the storyboard shows understanding within the storyline and organising ourselves as a group to uphold our plan and not just do whatever we want.

Magazine Advert Analysis - Miss Miller

The purpose of a magazine album advert has a variety of reasons towards why it is important when promoting the artist as well as the album. Some of which include another source of promotion of an artist's album, which then allows a wider target audience to be familiar with the artist and their new album, making it more popular and known. This is also an act of a constant reminder of the upcoming album, allowing this type of album to stay fresh in audiences minds and not be forgotten about. Including it in a magazine album advert can also link in with other advertisements of the album to create more marketing. There can also be another beneficial opportunity for the album as other companies can push the sales further, then making more audiences aware of the upcoming album. This type of promotion can also benefit the magazine as it can have relations towards particular articles within the piece.

One of the artists I have chosen to analysis is Adele. This links in with my chosen artist for my music video of Amy Winehouse as they both have similar types of music which range in Soul. The audience are immediately able to recognise the album cover is related to soul type of music due to the depressive state it presents. This is shown through the use of the colour being expressed to show a level of depression and that is is very clear to tell, due to the two colours of black and white that are used to show a clear light of a particular scenario, without making the situation more confusing for the audience. These two colours are effective as they set the mood for the album. These two colours are much more effective for the genre of soul than using bright neon colours, as they represent happiness and lots of positive energy; which would be more suitable for the genre of dance adverts. Another effective use within the album cover is the facial expressions, in both pictures of the artist, is shown to be looking down. This can leave a range of negative interpretations towards the audience, which they will only find out the real meaning when they purchase the album. This is effective as it engages the audience towards what's going to be involved within the album but not giving too much away, allowing subtle hints. The subtle hints involve her looking down, which show her to be the opposite of confident. Instead, showing her to be very reserved and deep in some sort of negative thought. The representation of the artist is shown to be very low, sad and depressed. Using close ups helps the audience to recognise this in a more immediate manner. The choice of images are effective as the audiences are able to see that the artist is upset and in a negative mind set at that particular time. The main image that is used has a lot of meaning to it(close up enlarged upon magazine advert, curving to the right hand side.) I think this due to the artists shadow of her face from the lighting being positioned from the left side. This then leaves the right side of the artists face being nearly completely covered by shadow. Adele almost looks as if she is fading into the black background of the album cover. This can portray a range of negative things for the audience as it can shows like the darkness is eating away at her, and she is allowing it due to how upset she feels. This makes the audience why she is in this state, causing them to be curious and interesting, resulting towards them purchasing the album. The design and layout is quite plain, not too much is going on, except close ups of the artist which is shown to be the brightest part of the magazine advert. This then shows the importance of this character towards the album and the essential role she plays.

Another album cover I have decided to analyse is by the artist Paloma Faith. I chose to analyse this as this artist has similar music to my chosen artist for my music video of Amy Winehouse. Paloma Faith's music ranges in jazz to soul music. When you first look at this magazine advert, you are able to see the artist being replicated as different characters all in one fraction. This can leave a range of interpretations towards the audience. The advert doesn't give much away, which can intrigue the audience towards purchasing the album to find out the mystery of all these different characters. This magazine advert portrays to me that the artist has a range of different personalities, due to particular scenarios which she has experienced which has caused her to react in different ways. The colours presented are very bright and vibrant, which is shown to be high key lighting. There are a range of filler lights which are directed in a variety of different areas. This is to show the spotlight upon the artist, which looks similar towards the performance of artists on stage, all glammed up with dresses on with the strong light of spotlight upon them. These bright colours are unconventional towards the genre of soul, as the colours are shown to be very bright, which represents happiness and excitement. Soul music adverts usually are filtered in an off tone effect, or only black and white to represent elements of sadness, discourage, low confidence etc.
The artist is shown in a variety of different characters, these include a witch, a mask covering her face, long green dress, provocative clothing and a Victorian like fashion, very exaggerated, big and sparkly. The audience are still able to easily tell that all the character are the same person, by keeping the style and colour of the hair, and type of the makeup used the same. She is shown to be completely different characters, which shows her with an element of extraordinary, the fact that she is more complex than to remain one person. Although these characters are very different, they still seem to be close due to the positioning of the characters, shown to be very close and some holding others. This can represent the artist is trying to use her strong elements to help herself where she feels weak, non dominant and not powerful.  This can also lead to many negative interpretations, such as this artist is schizophrenic, causing her to behave in a number of different personalities. The choice of images are shown to be all combined into one. The setting of the magazine advert is shown to be in a large hallway, which doors open where the light sources are. This type of hallway is shown to be large and decorated in a luxurious way, different from hallways in standards size houses. This can then leave an interpretation that the setting is a hotel like building. This type of connotation can then leave the audience to understand that her mixture of personas are the equivalent of a booked out, 5 star (from the luxurious detail on the walls) hotel. The typography is mainly in all capitals to grab the readers attention as well as the bright lights which highlight the characters facial expression and detailing upon the costume. The font is not shown to be bold, to ensure the audience are firstly engaged with the picture of the magazine advert, which then makes them want to see more, then leading onto reading the language presented. The artists name is shown to have a bigger and different style of font to allow the audience to recognise the importance of herself towards the album in an overall view. Within the language, facts are presented so the audience are more aware and know more about the album. These include the artists name, the album name, the tracks it includes and the date it is released.

Here is a magazine album cover from the successful artist of Jessie J. The way the magazine advert is presented is successful when trying to convey her type of music and what kind of artist she is. The representation of the artist is very efficient. She is shown to be very dominant and confident due to her facial expressions, body language and positioning of the character. Her hands are shown on her head with her arms contracting away from the body, this shows that she is powerful and fierce as she is shown to be streaming. This type of emotion is also shown through her facial expressions due to the fierce look in her eye and her mouth open, insinuating that she is using her vocal cords to scream. This shows her to be similar towards the intimidating animal such as a lion (fe-lion.) Shows her to be the top of the food chain. The dark colours shown can suggest that her music is very serious and will be a mystery unless you purchase the album, this is an effective act of advertisement as it intruiging the audience to want to purchase this particular type of merchandise. Her dark and heavy makeup also suggests a dangerous side to her, but also allows male audiences to feel more attracted to her  Jessie J is also shown to be represented as edgy, bold and alternative than other female artists as they are stereotypically perceived to be shown as pretty, innocent and tasteful. The way Jessie presents herself represents her to be very independent and careless, which is effective when making a successful and extraordinary 'Star.'
There is a little variety of colours used within the magazine advert. The lack of colour can convey a range of different meanings such as her purity of music. The srtist is not interested in the luxuries this type of careers includes, but only cares about the music, shows she'd rather go straight to e point of the advert rath than brain washing audiences to listening to the artists songs due to the fame and fortune they portray about themselves. The majority of the magazine advert is mainly black. This shows a sense if mystery, and a strong and powerful character. This is effective when trying to persue herself as an independent and successful woman which juxtaposes many female artists in this present time which maintain their life based around the male population. The white background then contrasts the black which can convey different personalities of the character, this can cost that she has an innocent element towards her and is not always fierce and intimdating. This shows that she is enabling the audience to witness different experiences of her life and how it has made her the person she is to this day. There is a range of successful design and layout presented within the magazine advert. The artist is shown to be placed in the center of the advertisement. This is effective as it highlights the importance towards her within the album. The design is very simplistic, not much is going on or anything too much in the audiences face, which represents her need to want to promote her music vomer than herself and let the music 'do all the talking.' The structure is very easy to read and flows nicely without anything such as colours clashing.
There is only one image shown of the artist, which is specified as a close up. This is used to ensure the audience are able to focus upon how the artist is looking and what type of emotion they are trying to portray. Using herself within the magazine advert is seen as an element of self promotion, which links within Dyer's theory of crutual things an artist should do in order to become successful. This is effective as more audiences are then able to then recognise her face and are able to put her particular dace towards her songs, which then make the audience able to create a bond with her as they can feel like they know her. In the artists close up, her mouth is shown to be open. This can show provocative behaviour which is frequently used for female artists to be able to be sexually desired by males and females looking up to them to be as 'perfect' as them. This close up also allows the audience to see her hair style type. It is almost similar towards the famous Cleopatria, who in which was a ruler and very dominant many decades ago. This can lead to the interpretation from the audience that these type of women are whom Jessie J looks up to and admires rather than classless celebrities such as Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj who allow high populations of audiences to sexually objectify them. This type of hairstyle also shows her originality and extraordinary character, which can be refreshing for viewers to watch. There is a range of different trusses of typography and the style of the language. The use of gold font can represent her wealth from her success in a subtle way. Showing how much she has worked and it has paid off by involving expensive, luxurious things, which can influence particular audiences to purchase the album as they respect and look up to people who are dominant and powerful budget wise. The use of showing her name in a larger font shows her importance towards the album and the style of the language almost mimics a necklace of a gold chain, this is conventional towards the genre of R&B as it shows an interest towards fashion and a meaning of wealth within her life. The logo also links in with one of Dyer's theories when producing a successful artist within the music entertainment as it is advertisting a certain type of product.

All of this analysis, I now have a more clear understanding towards the topic of magazine advert and will benefit me when planning my own for my music video. I looked at different types of soul and what included which makes it clear and effective towards the audience to what the artist is trying to portray. I have also analysed another magazine advert which ranges more in R&B to get more of an understanding towards similarities within the topic of magazine adverts and how different genres link in together. I feel more confident towards what I want to include within this. Some ideas I have developed include a close up or mid shot of the artist so the audience can be aware of how she physically looks. First impressions are extremely important in album covers so me and my group will ensure to include particular styles of hair, makeup and costume to represent the character in a rebellious way. These will include heavy makeup, such as dramatic winged eyeliner, red lipstick, alongside long hair with half of it done into a backcombed quiff. Part of the camera shot can also show the artists dress which can be red, to represent her as dangerous, different to just using plain colours etc. All of the magazine adverts analysed have the artists name in a bigger font than the rest of the writing, this has inspired me to also include within mine to emphasise the importance of the artist within the advert. Using a bigger font also helps to grab the audiences attention towards reading on the smaller font to find out more information.
